📖 Chapter 10 — The Human Eye and the Colourful World (CBSE Class 10 Science): Detailed notes — eye structure, defects & correction, dispersion, atmospheric refraction, scattering.
| Part | Function |
|---|---|
| Cornea | Front transparent layer; most refraction happens here |
| Iris | Controls the size of the pupil (amount of light) |
| Pupil | Opening that lets light in |
| Eye lens + ciliary muscles | Focus by changing focal length (accommodation) |
| Retina | Light-sensitive screen; forms a real, inverted image |
| Defect | Problem & correction |
|---|---|
| Myopia (near-sighted) | Can't see distant objects; image forms before retina → corrected by a concave lens |
| Hypermetropia (far-sighted) | Can't see near objects; image forms behind retina → corrected by a convex lens |
| Presbyopia | Old age; weak ciliary muscles → bifocal lens |
White light splits into seven colours (VIBGYOR) through a prism = dispersion (red bends least, violet most). A rainbow forms by dispersion + refraction + internal reflection in water droplets.
Tyndall effect — scattering by tiny particles. Blue sky (blue scatters most). Red sunrise/sunset (blue scattered away, red reaches us). Danger signals are red (least scattered, travels far). To an astronaut the sky is dark (no atmosphere to scatter).
